What is EIA? It's a blood disease found in horses. EIA is not contagious to humans and does not affect humans.
These horses are not sick, but carry antibodies in their bloodstream to the virus that causes "equine infectious anemia" OR (EIA).

The chance of one horse infecting another is approximately 1 in 6 million. Regardless, there is a law in Florida requiring positive EIA horses to be quarantined on property with a 200 yard radius from the nearest negative horse. If that is not possible, the horse must be destroyed even though it is healthy. There are some stables that do not have space to comply with this law, so they must have their horses euthanized.[killed]

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. needs your support to maintain a safe haven for these horses!
Welcome to our web site! We are a non-profit organization of horse lovers that have created a caring rescue ranch for horses that otherwise would have been destroyed. We'd like to thank everyone from the Broward County Commissioners to all the children and adults from the community that donate not only funds but their time and love. Please explore and enjoy our site. If we can answer any of your questions, please feel free to e-mail us anytime at: info@eiahorses.org We are a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization. **(CH14915) All donations are tax deductible. Would you like to help by making an online donation? It is secure and easy and tax deductible! All donations both small and large are very much needed and appreciated!

TO HELP THE HORSES

Perhaps you would be interested in how we came to be? In 1970, a herd of horses had to be relocated to Plantation Acres, Florida due to construction. Several months after the move, some of the horses tested positive for EIA. F.R.I.E.N.D.S.; or (Florida Research Institute for Equine Nurturing, Development and Safety, Inc.) was formed when the ranch was once again forced to move because of construction. Some of the original members of that ranch are still with the organization. Originally, one special lady and several other people, started the quarantine ranch in 1970 which became a haven for these horses, as well as other animals that have been abandoned. Her name is Susan Young and she is the founder of the first EIA quarantine ranch which today is known as F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Ranch. This woman's passion for horses still runs deep as she is still caring for and riding horses today at the age of 81 !! See for yourself!

Established as a non-profit in 1987, we continue to provide a safe haven for horses identified with EIA in the state of Florida. Today F.R.I.E.N.D.S. has the "SPONSOR-A-HORSE" Program for those individuals and families who normally would not be able to afford the high cost of owning and boarding a horse. Our pricing includes EVERYTHING! Full board-the feed and feeding of grain and hay, supplements, pasture hay, stall, turn out, stall cleaning and feed moving! Would you like to take a look at some of our orphan horses available to sponsor?

WE HAVE HORSES AVAILABLE ON THE ORPHAN PAGE
!PLEASE TAKE A LOOK! YOU MIGHT JUST SEE A HORSE YOU WANT TO SPONSOR!

Remember, we provide the horse, stall, pasture, feed and feeding of hay and grain,as well as pasture hay, supplements, dues, stall cleaning and feed moving! All of that for a very reasonable monthly charge dependent on the needs of each horse. You won't find a better deal out there! Applicants need not have riding experience: we match the horse with the rider according to their ability, as we have both gentle and spirited horses and ponies. Click on the link and take a look!
THE ORPHANS We are always looking for new members, volunteers and supporters of our program, as well as monetary donations and any donated items we may be in need of.
F.R.I.E.N.D.S. is a family ranch where people go to escape and get back to nature. It's a great place for the whole family to share their time together, with relaxation, socializing, and good old fashion exercise! It is also a great place for teens and kids of all ages to learn responsibility. Once you have sponsored a horse and perhaps find that you may no longer have time or the finances to devote to them, you simply notify the organization and we will try to find the horse a new sponsor. The approximate cost per month per horse runs from $150 to $400. Please contact us if you are interested in sponsoring a horse or if you would like to come out to see the horses available.

Also, please save your UPC labels from your FARNAM PRODUCTS (Rotation 1, Rotation 2 and Ivercare.) The pharmaceutical company has agreed to send us in return, a percentage of the purchase price for every UPC label they receive from us. This can really add up! Please help us out and mail them to: FRIENDS, Inc.
